Dark Characters

FAMILY TREE:

CHARACTERS:

THE KAHNWALDS
Jonas Kahnwald
Jonas is the son of Hannah and Michael Kahnwald, formerly known as Mikkel Nielsen, who was the younger brother of Jonas' friends in 2019 and who traveled back in time to 1986. Jonas dated Martha Nielsen prior to Michael's suicide in June 2019, but broke things off once he realized Martha was actually his aunt. The version of Jonas from the future attempts to destroy the wormhole. In the final moments of the season finale, 2019 Jonas travels from 1986 through a hole in time and space to an apocalyptic version of the future. Like the Mikkel/Michael connection, 2019 Jonas (Louis Hofmann) is actually a younger version of the show's raincoat-wearing stranger (Andreas Pietschmann). Future Jonas (who is somehow a brunette, even though teenage Jonas is very clearly blond) goes back to 2019 to try to explain what's going on to his younger self and why bringing little Mikkel back from the '80s would have deadly consequences (for instance, Jonas would never be born).Michael Kahnwald/Mikkel NielsenMikkel Nielsen/Michael KahnwaldMikkel is the youngest son of Ulrich and Katharina Nielsen. Mikkel is the younger brother of Martha and Magnus Nielsen, who take Mikkel with them on a trip to the caves with Jonas Kahnwald and Bartosz Tiedemann. That night in November 2019, he falls backward through time to 1986. While being treated by Ines Kahnwald at the hospital, Mikkel meets Hannah. They eventually wed and Hannah gives birth to a son, Jonas, who was there the day Mikkel traveled back in time. The 1986 Mikkel (Daan Lennard Liebrenz) — Ulrich and Katharina's young son who goes missing — and 2019 Michael (Sebastian Rudolph) — Jonas's father and Hannah's husband who kills himself in the show's first scene — are one and the same. His fate is easily one of the more heartbreaking stories in the first season.Hannah KahnwaldHannah KahnwaldHannah is the mother of Jonas and widow of Michael Kahnwald, formerly known as Mikkel Nielsen. She has been in love with Ulrich Nielsen since 1986. She has an affair with him in 2019, but Ulrich ends their arrangement after Mikkel's disappearance. She is definitely not all right in the head. There's one big thing that 1986 Hannah (Ella Lee) and 2019 Hannah (Maja Schöne) have in common: they're savage. Hannah is one of Dark's most twisted, deceitful characters, with each episode unveiling a new layer of just how, well, dark she can be.Ines KahnwaldInes Kahnwald
Ines is the adoptive mother of Michael Kahnwald, formerly known as Mikkel Nielsen. She was a nurse at the Winden hospital in 1986 and formed a bond with the stranded-in-time Mikkel. A part of her always knew that Mikkel was telling the truth when he said he was from the future. A letter written before he committed suicide on June 21, 2019 confirmed it. She is also the grandmother-in-law of Jonas and mother-in-law of Hannah. Her father was Daniel. Ines is a little easier to keep track of thanks to the striking mole above her mouth. In 1986, Ines (Anne Ratte-Polle) is a nurse working at the hospital where Mikkel is brought in, and by 2019, she (Angela Winkler) is revealed to be the secret-keeping and letter-hoarding grandmother of Jonas.
THE NIELSENS
Michael Kahnwald/Mikkel NielsenMikkel Nielsen/Michael KahnwaldMikkel is the youngest son of Ulrich and Katharina Nielsen. Mikkel is the younger brother of Martha and Magnus Nielsen, who take Mikkel with them on a trip to the Winden cave in 2019, where he falls backward through time to 1986. While being treated by Ines Kahnwald at the hospital, Mikkel meets 14-year-old Hannah. The two eventually wed and Hannah gives birth to a son, Jonas ... who was the friend of his older brother and sister in 2019. His fate is easily one of the more heartbreaking stories in the first season.Martha NielsenMartha is the middle child and only daughter of Ulrich and Katharina Nielsen. She is the sister of Magnus and Mikkel Nielsen. After the latter travels back in time and fathers a child (Jonas), it is revealed that Martha is Jonas' aunt, which is awkward since she and Jonas previously dated. She doesn't understand why Jonas suddenly starts avoiding her. She previously dated Bartosz Tiedemann while Jonas was receiving treatment for post-traumatic stress after his father's (Mikkel/Michael) suicide in June 2019.Magnus NielsenMagnus is the eldest son of Ulrich and Katharina Nielsen. He is currently sleeping with Franziska Doppler, whose parents are Charlotte and Peter Doppler. He is the one who took Mikkel to the cave in 2019 and he does not handle Mikkel's disappearance well.Ulrich NielsenUlrich NielsenUlrich is the eldest son of Jana and Tronte Nielsen. In 2019, Ulrich works in law enforcement alongside Charlotte Doppler, wife of Peter Doppler. He is engaged in an affair with Hannah Kahnwald prior to Mikkel's disappearance. His brother Mads (Valentin Oppermann) disappeared in similar fashion in 1986, which drives him to find Mikkel. Mads is the boy who is found dead in the woods in 2019 because time travel is weird. The 1986 Ulrich is a rebellious troublemaker who grows up to marry his high school sweetheart, Katharina, and become both a father of three and a detective in 2019.Katharina NielsenKatharina NielsenKatharina is the wife of Ulrich Nielsen and the mother of Magnus, Martha and Mikkel Nielsen. In 1986, Hannah files a false police report accusing Ulrich of raping Katharina in order to drive them apart. Katharina believes Regina Tiedemann reported her, causing bad blood between them that still exists in 2019. In 2019 she is the principal of the local high school. Although the 2019 Katharina is a devoted mother and principal, 1986 Katharina is just as much of a little rebel as her boyfriend. Regardless of which time period you meet her in, however, she's got some dangerously sharp edges to her personality.Jana NielsenJana NielsenJana is the mother of Ulrich and Mads Nielsen. She is married to Tronte Nielsen, who had an affair with Claudia Tiedemann in 1986. After Mads' disappearance Jana is unable to function properly. Poor Jana. No matter what time she's introduced — 1986 Jana or 2019 Jana — she's never all there, so to speak. Ulrich's mother just could not bounce back after the tragic kidnapping of her youngest son, Mads.Tronte NielsenTronte NielsenTronte is the father of Ulrich and Mads Nielsen. He is married to Jana, but had an affair with Claudia Tiedmann in 1986. He moved to Winden with his mother Agnes in 1953. His father is unknown. When Mads' body falls through a crack in time, Peter Doppler witnesses it and calls Tronte, who relocates the body to the woods, where it is found by Ulrich and Charlotte Doppler. Ulrich's scumbag father, Tronte, is one of the few characters we see at three stages in his life: 1953, 1986, and 2019. He moves to the town in the '50s with his mother and later becomes a reporter and carries on an affair with Claudia as his wife suffers alone. A real stand-up guy.Agnes NielsenImage result for dark netflix character Agnes Nielsen picturesAgnes is the mother of Tronte Nielsen. They moved to Winden in 1953; Tronte's father is never seen. Agnes seems to be interested in Doris Tiedemann, whom she befriends when she rents a room in their house.
THE TIEDEMANNSBartosz TiedemannImage result for Bartosz TiedemannBartosz is the only son of Regina and Aleksander Tiedemann, who was born Boris Niewald and is the current head of nuclear power plant. He dated Martha Nielsen while Jonas Kahnwald was being treated for post-traumatic stress after his father's suicide. He is now being manipulated by the mysterious man known as Noah, much like Helge Doppler once was.Regina TiedemannRegina TiedemannRegina is the mother of Bartosz Tiedemann and wife of Aleksander, who came to her defense in 1986 and now runs the nuclear power plant. Regina, who runs the only hotel in Winden, is the only daughter of Claudia Tiedemann. She was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. She is a lifelong enemy of Katharina Nielsen because in 1986 she was attacked by Katharina (who misbelieved Regina was the snitch) after Regina was framed by Hannah for the false 1986 police report that accused Ulrich of raping Katharina. It might come as a bit of a shock that 1986 Regina — a kindhearted, curly-headed nerd — grows up to be the glamorous-but-stressed-out Regina of 2019. As the series goes on, you begin to see what causes Regina's transformation and why she carries such a chip on her well-dressed shoulders.Aleksander TiedemannAleksander TiedemannThe 1986 Aleksander is a bit of a mystery, to be honest. Born Boris Niewald, he arrived in Winden in 1986 and stole/assumed the identity of Aleksander Kohler. He gets a job at the nuclear power plant, which is then run by Regina's mother Claudia at the time. He pops up at just the right moment to save Regina as a teen, and the pair later in life marry. By 2019, he's grown into a hardened businessman who is now in charge of the nuclear plant. He is the father of Bartosz Tiedemann. Maybe season two will delve deeper into where Aleksander/Boris grew up and why he had those two fake passports.Claudia TiedemannClaudia TiedemannClaudia definitely has one of the most dramatic transformations of the cast. The 1953 Claudia is the spoiled daughter of Doris and Egon Tiedmann and is seen tutoring young Helge and flirting with young TronteClaudia is the mom of Regina and by 1986 Claudia becomes the first woman to run the nuclear power plant in Winden and also has an affair with Tronte Nielsen. Her dog disappears in 1953 and reappears in the caves in 1986, while Claudia is inspecting a stash of radioactive material from the nuclear power plant. The jaw-dropping, life-changing secrets she uncovers during her first year on the job result in her withdrawing from the world. In 2019, we find out that she's been living in isolation in a mysterious underground bunker and appears as an elderly woman who delivers the plans to make a device that will supposedly close the wormhole in the caves.Egon TiedemannEgon TiedemannEgon is the father of Claudia Tiedmann. He is a police officer in 1953, trying to make a name for himself as a cop by solving the murders of two young boys, and investigates the disappearance of little Helge Doppler, eventually arresting Ulrich Nielsen who traveled back in time from 2019. In 1986, older Egon is a burned-out detective who no one in the town trusts, as he investigates the disappearance of Mads Nielsen, believing 1986 Ulrich to be responsible for his brother's disappearance. Also in 1986, Egon — who is months away from retirement — arrests Ulrich for raping Katharina, though that was a lie made up by that psycho Hannah. He really hates Ulrich. Both iterations of Egon get into some pretty serious scuffles with Ulrich.
THE DOPPLERSElisabeth DopplerElisabeth is the youngest daughter of Charlotte and Peter Doppler. She is deaf and dating Yasin, who goes missing in 2019. One day, while walking home in the rain, Elisabeth meets the mysterious stranger Noah, who hands her Charlotte's pocketwatch with the engraved words "For Charlotte" so that she can give it to her mom.Franziska DopplerImage result for dark Franziska DopplerFranziska is the eldest daughter of Charlotte and Peter Doppler. Her grandfather is Helge Doppler, whose parents were Greta and Bernd Doppler. Bernd worked for the nuclear power plant in Winden. She is currently sleeping with Magnus Nielsen and apparently takes rhythmic gymnastics.Charlotte DopplerCharlotte DopplerCharlotte is the mother of Franziska and wife of Peter Doppler, who is secretly gay. Her father-in-law is Helge Doppler, who is desperate to undo everything he did in 1986. We don't get to see much of 1986 Charlotte, other than her fascination with the town's falling dead bird problem. She seemed to be a loner in high school. In 2019, older Charlotte is Ulrich's superior at the police station and still just as curious about the strange phenomena that seem to plague the town.Peter DopplerImage result for dark Peter DopplerPeter is a therapist and the son of Helge Doppler, who used to work at the nuclear power plant. Although he is married to Charlotte Doppler, he is gay but has not really accepted this. He witnesses the body of Mads Nielsen fall through a hole in time and space in 2019, after which he calls Tronte Nielsen, who moves Mads' body to the woods where Ulrich Nielsen and Charlotte find it. He is the father of Franziska and Elisabeth Doppler.Helge DopplerHelge DopplerHelge Doppler was the only son of the rich and powerful Bernd and Greta Doppler, who ran the nuclear power plant. He briefly went missing in 1953, when he traveled forward through time to 1986 after being attacked by the 2019 version of Ulrich Nielsen, who thought if he killed Helge in 1953, Mikkel would never go missing in 2019. In 1986, Helge was manipulated by the mysterious stranger known as Noah, who told him to kidnap young children to use for experimentation. In 2019, Helge traveled back in time to 1986 in an attempt to stop his younger self. He dies there after ramming his car into the 1986 version of himself. Helge can't catch a break no matter what year it is. The 1953 Helge, 1986 Helge, and 2019 Helge are all fighting to overcome something — a man attempting to murder him, disturbing moral quandaries, and deep regret for what he's done.
OTHER KEY CHARACTERSH.G. TannhausH.G. TannhausH.G. Tannhaus is a clockmaker living in Winden. He built the Apparatus, a special time-traveling device, with the blueprints provided by 2019 Claudia Tiedemann, as well as 2052 Jona's Cesium battery and duplicate future device and 2019 Ulrich's smartphone He is often visited by Jonas to discuss time travel. He also appeared in television to talk about wormholes and wrote the book A Journey Through Time. The 1953 H.G. Tannhaus and 1986 H.G. Tannhaus equally (and inadvertently) play their part in keeping the wormhole below the town open by helping to invent the Apparatus.NoahNoahNoah is Dark's most frustrating character. What do we know about him by the end of season one? That he's a priest, but he's evil. That he enjoys kidnapping and murdering young men. That he doesn't age. That he is an Anti-Christ, but not the Anti-Christ incarnate. And that's . . . about it. On the bright side, he's very easy to keep track of.
